Within gray and white mater R2* variations correlate histochemical iron stain of the human brain

چکیده
The magnitude and phase images derived from high resolution T2* weighted MRI at high field strength have been used to reveal laminar contrast in the gray (GM) matter and fiber bundle-like structure in the white matter (WM) of the human brain [1,2]. Interestingly, this contrast is quite variable within cortical gray matter and within subcortical areas near the border between GM and white matter. This has been attributed to variations in magnetic susceptibility, possibly due to iron and myelin. A recent iron extraction study of the visual cortex suggests that non-heme iron is the primary source of cortical laminar susceptibility contrast [3]. In this study, we performed correlative R2* mapping and histology in postmortem human visual area tissue to assess the contribution of iron and myelin in the R2* variations within GM and WM.

Investigation of magnetic susceptibility contrast across cortical grey matter and white matter
Magnetic susceptibility contrast in high field MRI has been used to reveal contrast variations within gray matter (GM) of the human brain [1]. Intriguingly, this contrast, to a certain extent, reflects the layer structure of cortical gray matter and is quite variable across brain regions. R2* and particularly phase contrast are quite strong in the primary visual cortex (VC) of the occipital lob...
متن کاملSusceptibility induced gray–white matter MRI contrast in the human brain
MR phase images have shown significantly improved contrast between cortical gray and white matter regions compared to magnitude images obtained with gradient echo sequences. A variety of underlying biophysical mechanisms (including iron, blood, myelin content, macromolecular chemical exchange, and fiber orientation) have been suggested to account for this observation but assessing the individua...

Purpose: This study is designed to determine the sex differences in brain weight and volume of left hemisphere and its gray and white matters in right-handed normal subjects and the right-handed subjects which were suffered from Alzheimer and Parkinson diseases. Materials and Methods: This study was performed on 72 normal human brains (38 male, 34 female), 11 brains suffered from Alzheimer (4 ...
متن کاملAssessment of Iron Deposition and White Matter Maturation in Infant Brains by Using Enhanced T2 Star Weighted Angiography (ESWAN): R2* versus Phase Values
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Iron deposition and white matter (WM) maturation are very important for brain development in infants. It has been reported that the R2* and phase values originating from the gradient-echo sequence could both reflect the iron and myelination. The aim of this study was to investigate age-related changes of R2* and phase value, and compare their performances for monitoring i...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE In Alzheimer disease (AD), elevated brain iron concentrations in gray matter suggest a disruption in iron homeostasis, while demyelination processes in white matter increase the water content. Our aim was to assess whether the transverse proton relaxation rate, or R2, an MR imaging parameter affected by changes in brain iron concentration and water content, was different ...
